EMU

THE EMU

Dromaius novaehollandiae

Emu eggs are around 15cm long. They lay 5-11 eggs each year. Unlike other birds, males sit on their nest and raise the babies.

Chicks have stripes for camouflage. After 3 months they grow adult feathers to replace their stripes.Emus are on the cote of arms because they can not walk backwards

Emus can run up to 50 kilometres per hour. They use their wings to steer them when they are running. Unlike most birds, emus can swim well!

Emus need water every day but can live for a long time without food. An emu's diet contains berries, seeds, flowers and small animals. They also eat rocks to help break down food in their stomach.
