THE SWIFT PARROT

THE SWIFT PARROT

Lathamus discolor

Swift parrots are related to rosellas but look a lot like lorikeets. Their feathers are good camouflage in trees. They are called swift parrots because they are very fast at flying.

They live in flocks in Tasmania and south-eastern Australia. Their habitat is forest and woodland. Swift parrots are endangered.

Swift parrots migrate in winter to find flowering eucalypts, because nectar is their food.

They fly all the way across the water from Tasmania to the mainland! Then in spring they return to Tasmania to breed.
